Dirt Route
On Interstate 80, Grantsville, Tooele County, Utah
Doable on a cross bike, but a bit rough. Fun as long as it's dry and not too hot.

Overall Fun loop, Rode it clockwise. The road had Three 30 foot sections that were still really muddy, but I was able to hike around them, I imagine they will be dry in the next couple weeks. The last little bit right before you start riding along the freeway had some super deep sand, and was forced to walk. Great views of the Stansbury mountains.

Great early season ride to dial in your bike and loosen up your legs. First timers note: Park in the large gravel parking lot next to the Tesoro gas station and use the dirt road at the far end of the parking lot and not the main gravel road nearer to I-80. This is much smoother and more pleasant than that awful gravel road. When you come to the cow pen, veer to the right and link up with that gravel road. It turns much smoother at this point. Riding it counter clockwise (race route) the first half is a surprisingly smooth, gently climb/warm up with a few punchy, short climbs with a couple of lengthy deep sand sections thrown in to make things exciting. You come up on this after a lengthy dirt road warm up skirting I-80 which eventually turns to chopped up tarmac and then a short section of smooth, old highway road. The second half turns technical, climby and rough. I did this on a gravel bike with 700 x 38 Panaracer Gravel King SLK's, flared drop bars and a 2x drivetrain and the bike did just fine. Despite a subtle rise back towards I-80 the road turned fairly smooth and I was able to average about 15mph back the last 4 miles or so back to the parking lot. If you're worried about getting too tired to finish the loop, I would suggest riding it clock-wise and getting the rough stuff over with first. This would leave you with a VERY lengthy descent all the way back to the parking lot. Keep in mind, this is open high desert with no shade or water. Dress/pack appropriately.
