Pretty decent trail for a gravel bike. From the small parking spot on the frontage road, don't let the chunky gravel descent scare you. It's the only stretch that has actually gravel spread on the trail. The rest is either hard packed clay road or sometimes rocky dirt double track. The trail portions to the south and to the east are the clay sections. It is sandy and soft in spots, but nothing horrible. The western and northern portions are dirt double track that becomes quite rocky at times, but again not bad. Other than the initial descent, the ride quite flat. If you are looking for scenery, you get only barren desert--pretty in its own way. This is actually a great ride for a gravel bike--a little much for a road bike, but not quite requiring a mountain bike. I would suggest wider tires though (mine are 38 and did fine) because skinny tires will be sinking in quite often. That's a drag, energy waster, and sometimes hard to control. Also, if you are going in the summer, go early. It gets hot fast out there. There are a few dry wells and tanks, but no water to be found. The ride took me about 2 hours and 40 minutes with several stops.

Good time. Rode it counterclockwise. The road coming back from closest to grassy mountains was more sandy and rocky, but rideable.
