I rode the northern 12 miles of this route yesterday on my gravel bike. As described, it's completely flat, 100% gravel, and appears to be legal. There are a few cattle gates that are closed but not locked, with instructions to close the gate behind you.
We saw some cattle grazing on either side of the levee and passed through several areas with bees, due to seasonal bee boxes near the levee. The bees didn't give us any trouble.
Out and back. Zero access to the southern end from east or west (without a boat). Mostly absolutely flat except for a short hike-a-bike across the RR and the dive under I80. A bit boring as it is mostly laser straight with a few wide turns. On the other hand it gets you away from city noise and traffic without having to go far. If you like the Delta landscape you’ll see plenty of it. Lots of cows and wildlife. I recommend leaving in the morning and having lunch at the turnaround.
@JACK Can you suggest an alternate route from Cottonwood Campground to Sac Town? Or I was thinking about taking a row boat across the channel to the bottom of the long finger and dropping the bikes off and then riding north, or does that sound idiotic?
@REDVULTR there is no access on the southern end. The only way in and out is on the north side. The ride is a long finger with water on both sides. You're riding a levee.
I saw a person biking it. And one of the signs at the beginning said city of west sac - no unauthorized vehicles. I took that to mean no driving personal cars on the road. There were gaps in some of the fences which would give me the impression that pedestrian and bike traffic is ok.
