Dirt Segment
From CA-41 to Wawona Rd, Fish Camp, Mariposa County, California
Mostly along Chowchilla Mountain Rd. Begin near Fish Camp post office, head south on 41 until turnoff (1/3 mile), climb paved Summit Camp Rd. past housing until pavement ends about one mile later. Forest road begins, with 3-4 streams along route for fresh water source (filtering recommended). Nice descents, but in late summer watch for deep soft dry dirt in certain sections, one place was 8-10 inches deep. Choose carefully. Last portion of ride is along Yosemite's Wawona Meadow Loop Trail, which is one of few trails open to bikes (and leashed pets and horses). Labeled as "flat," it is a nice 3-mile dirt loop in the forest around the golf course meadow with about 200 feet of climbing on a former road with horse dropping obstacles for fun. Watch for horseback tourist trips. Stop as they pass, they have right of way.
