I did this climb a few days ago (12/04/2016). The view of the mine is a little depressing, but this is a nice way to get into the forest and the paved descent down the other side is rewarding. The gravel is well packed and while there are some washboard sections it had no significant potholes. You can do this on pure road tires if necessary, but something with a more air volume will be more comfortable.
