I rode this yesterday on a gravel bike and while I made it without mishap the Sawtooth section is best on a mountain bike. You can avoid that by taking the actual Sawtooth road which parallels it but then you miss the incredible views.

Gravel roads and single track with a considerable amount of climbing. Some of the single track is technical and rocky but certainly possible to ride on a gravel or cross bike.
