i take this mountain road pass often in my truck. Anyone trying to ride it on a gravel bike deserves a medal, in the upper reaches its mega steep, iquite rough and not at all what I would consider a practical bike route. The West Virginia side is quite poorly maintained with sharp switchbacks, narrow shelf roads with occasional traffic, it could be considered dangerous. Not recommended to take with a bike. The lower reaches until one reaches the National Forest just after Sugar Knob and Segar Mount in the map are more accessible for biking.
The switchbacks on this climb exist for a reason—grades go well into the double digits on the straights. Would be fun on a mountain bike with a pie plate, but I wouldn't recommend it on anything less than an endurance bike with a compact and an 11-28.
Descending (in either direction) is hairy, as the gravel gets really loose at the switchbacks. Disc brakes recommended, unless you need a good reason to have to buy new rim pads.
