Excellent hike or ride, but be careful where you park. On San Juan Bautista side, cars were being broken into at the parking area. We parked closer to town as a result. Worth the hike! I did not see any bikes last time I was there.

The four miles of the route are divided fairly evenly between up and down. There's a few sections of 13-14% on both sides with lots of climbing in the 9% range. Great bakery in San Juan as well as the Windmill Market to get more water and eats. Hot in the summer and wet/muddy in the winter. Lots of history on this route!

27 July 2019: This dirt and rock trail can be used by road, gravel or mountain bikes in dry weather. It is a historic stage coach road. It is gated at each end. Today we noted weeds encroaching the trail and thistles on southern half of route. Port-a-pottie at North Trailhead in good repair. Vistas from the trail summit and then north to the trailhead are remarkable.
